April 15, 2017 - We went to the British Museum today (kinda by accident - long story).
One of the highlights of this enormous place are the "Elgin Marbles" The picture show some of them.
In 1801 Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin, was visiting the famous Parthenon in Greece. It was adorned with priceless sculpture and reliefs all around it.
The reason they are not there on the structure today is....HE TOOK THEM.
At that time the area was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and a local Sultan said "sure you can have them" (or words to that effect).
So he cut them off the building and shipped them to England.
As time has gone by, Greece has asked for their defaced property back but as of 2014 England has said no. Their reason? "Dude we bought them and have the receipt"
