We arrived...Everyone was dead

Dia de los Muertos

“We never bury the dead, son. We take them with us. It’s the price of living.” – Jose Molina

We arrived in Mexico City tonight. Viewing the city from the airplane was an awesome sight. The air was clear and you could see the mountains in the distance. What impressed you at altitude is how densely packed the city looks. It's population is North of 20 million and it looks it from the air. The city spread out to the horizon in every direction.

As we drove in we noticed people everywhere with skull costumes. We did not plan this, but we arrived in the middle of the 'Day of the Dead" celebrations or 'Dia de los muertos'. Anyone who has seen the Pixar movie "Coco" knows about this holiday. Although it has an American Halloween feel to it, it is actually a celebration of those who have passed on with memorials and revelry.

So we dropped our bags off at the hotel and, since it was still early, went in search of dinner. As we hunted for street food, we came across the large central square in the heart of the historic district - more on this place later - and to our delight it was decorated vividly for the holiday.

We wandered in the cool night air through the crowd looking at the myriad of people in all kinds of costumes. Some where traditional and some pop culture.

We found some tamales at a street vendor and ate them on the curb watching the people go by.

It was an excellent way to start Episode VIII
