The White City of Lakes

Overlooking the Water Palace on the Lake in Udaipur, India

February 17, 2019 -

“...... And it is said that at night, when the moon is full, her ghost is seen upon a rope, running back and forth across the lake.” - From a local legend of a dancing girl who walked across the lake on a rope to impress the Udaipur Raj and was betrayed.

We made to to Udaipur late last night. Our first train trip in India lived up to expectations. It was 2 hours late. The rails were old and bumpy. There were food peddlers selling everything from chai tea to mini dominoes pizzas (where did they come from?). We were in a sleeper car that was 3 tiered. It was crowded , not private, but very atmospheric. Camel after camel were all along the countryside. And, as you see in the movies, you can stand in the doorway and lean out while zooming along. I did this for a few minutes until it dawned on me this is an excellent way to die.

Udaipur is in the southern area of Rajasthan. It is known as the White City or City of Lakes. It is surrounded by a small mountain range that abuts the Thar Desert. Its population is 400,000 to 500,000 making it our smallest city so far.

It is known for its romantic beauty. It is easy to see why. It is so much quieter here. The white palaces and temples that surround the serene lake are lovely. The temperature, at least this time of year, is very mild. The view you see below is from the ghats near our Air BnB.

We will begin our exploration this afternoon. I can already say, I think this city will be my favorite.

Colleen and Ajoo

(Ok right after I wrote this we were introduced to ‘Ajoo’ a charming Indian woman who attends to the Air BnB guests. She brought us sliced fruit, fresh water, Chai tea in a ceramic cup, made our room, then announced she is also a masseuse with head, shoulder and feet massages. She comes with the rental of the room! .......we will be extending our Udaipur stay. 😃
