July 19, 2018 - Europe is rich with natural treasures. Some of the most scenic islands on the continent form the Stockholm Archipelago.
We have been staying on one of the larger islands, but yesterday afternoon we took a ferry and cruised out to the tip of the chain to Sandhamn Island. If we went further we would be back in Finland.
Here, millennia ago, the glaciers that formed all of these islands slowed down and ground the rock to sand. So Sandhamm “Sand Harbor” offers one of the few sandy beaches around.
By U.S. standards the beaches are quite small but none the less they are enormously popular with the local Swedes. So the majority of people on the trip were all locals on holiday, which everyone gets 4 weeks minimum here paid, from Stockholm.
The center of the small island has a beautiful and unique forest. We had a opportunity to walk through it while crossing to the other side. Tall, straight stately pine trees with little to no underbrush. Just a soft, rolling small carpet of moss and blueberry bushes. With the dappled sunlight coming through the entire scene had a fairy tale quality.
Today is our last day in the islands. Tomorrow we head to Stockholm for the final chapter in this episode.
