The 'George Washington' of Italy

The Victor Emmanuel Monument

November 12, 2019 - If you come to Rome you cannot miss this enormous white marble monument near the Roman Forum. It is not old, at least by Rome’s standards. It is the Victor Emmanuel Monument dedicated to Italy’s first King. He was essentially the George Washington of Italy.

Present day Italy was not unified until 1861. It was a long and at times inelegant process but eventually successful under King Victor. He is buried in the Pantheon.

One of the things that is interesting about the building is it affords the opportunity to see what Rome may have looked like to a visitor in around 200 AD. Augustus famously said, “ I inherited a city of brick and left you a city of marble.”

We went to the top of the building for a grand view.
