March 19, 2018 - Through a New York Times article we found ‘The Authors’ Lounge’ at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya river. We came here for high tea.
Founded in the 1870’s it has seen such luminaries as Noel Coward, Joesph Conrad, W Somerset Maugham, and many more lived and wrote here in this very room.
It was here that W Somerset Maugham wrote parts of his masterpiece “Of Human Bondage”. In it the protagonist searches for happiness.
He concludes , “ The simplest pattern, that in which a man was born, worked, married , had children and died, was likewise the most perfect.” He decided to be content with his own lot in life.
