The American spy who disappeared

Writer's picture: Glenn DobbsGlenn Dobbs

March 23, 2018 - This lovely young girl in traditional Thai dress is spinning silk at the Jim Thompson house in Bangkok. The house is a beautiful all teak wood home filled with oriental art and a mystery.

Jim Thompson House

Jim Thompson was an American spy in WWII who after the war moved to Bangkok and set up a silk business. It did not do well until the costume designer for the musical ‘The King and I’ decided to use his products. Afterwards he thrived and became one of the most famous men in Southeast Asia.

At age 61 he was with some friends in Malaysia. After attending Easter services he decided to go for a stroll. He disappeared and was never seen again. No body was ever found. The mystery has never been solved. It is the stuff of Hollywood movies.

Today is our last day in Thailand. Tomorrow we leave for Cambodia.
