Some of our travel influencers

Updated: May 3, 2019

April 19, 2019 -

We knew next to nothing when we started thinking about extended travel. Blogs and You Tube proved to be invaluable to get us thinking about where to go and how we might succeed.

These 12 (15 - I added more below) people greatly influenced us to travel and helped show us the way. If you are thinking about travel, spend some time with them and you too will likely develop wanderlust.

Where We Be - Robert and Robin Charlton. This couple, our imaginary best friends, started everything for us. They do a great job on their site publishing not only where they travel, but how much they spend and what was their itinerary. It was reading their book “How to Retire Early” that started our own journey.

Here is their website.

And here is their highly recommended book

The Senior Nomads - Debbie and Michael Campbell. This couple sold their home and have been traveling the world since 2013 one Air BnB at a time. They have a very influential blog and one great story after another

Here is their website -

Wolter’s World Mark and Jocelyn Wolters. Mark is all over You Tube with practical advice about travel to almost every country you can imagine. Although the production value of his videos is limited, the advice is not. If you are seeking practical, helpful tips, this is the couple to turn to before traveling

Here is their website -

The Vagabrothers - Marko and Alex Ayling. These are two brothers that won a video contest on traveling and have turned it into a full time business. They are young, very hipster, and all over social media. They produce very high quality videos on travel and their focus has been more on culture than actual sight seeing. Still, they are engaging, enthusiastic and really instill a sense of wanderlust.

Here is their website -

Kara and Nate. Kara and Nate Buchanan. Another young couple traveling the world. They are almost annoyingly adorable to watch. They travel everywhere and document every step. Their videos are beautifully produced and very entertaining.

Here is their website -

The New York Times - The Frugal Traveler Series A running series of articles in the New York Times on thoughtful and frugal traveling.

Here is the link-

Hey Nadine - Nadine Sykora. Another young millennial who is popular on the VLOG circuit. Her content is similar to the Vagbrothers and Kara and Nate. However, she is geared more to tips and advice for a female traveler. Her videos are slickly produced and entertaining.

Here is her website -

Rick Steves - The well known and indispensable travel guide and host. His specialty is Europe. No one makes better travel books and has more detailed practical advice and tips than him. He is also a phenomenal teacher. His well known PBS series ‘Travel with Rick Steves’ is must see television for any trip to Europe.

He is everywhere but if you need a starting point, here is his website-

The late great Anthony Bourdain - For me, no other travel host more instilled me with a wanderlust and a sense of curiosity than Mr Bourdain. His loss was deeply felt by me as well as millions around the world.

His material is all over the iTunes Store and amazon.com

Here are two more great resources that we used a lot that I neglected to put in my original post -

Karl Watson

Karl Watson Travel Documentaries - Another young millennial traveler who mostly services the backpacker / hostel crowd. What sets him apart is he is a gifted film maker and editor. His films are full length, fascinating documentaries of locations from around the world.

His web site is https://www.karlwatson.net

Travel with Samuel and Audrey

Samuel and Audrey - Travel & Food Videos.

Another earnest and fun to watch young Canadian couple who have been everywhere. There videos are not as highly polished but they are full of useful advice and wide eyed wonder about the places they have seen.
