November 4, 2018 - On our excursion from Rome we are hitting several stops along the coast that are near each other before heading back to our flat.
The weather has turned against us. Our one evening in Positano was warm, glowing, and very much showed off the ‘Dolce Vita’ lifestyle made famous by John Steinbeck. He wrote about this area in 1953 and since that time it has been popular with tourists.
I thought I would show a few more pictures I took later that evening before we climb back into that bus for another insane cliff edge bus ride up the coast to the village of Almafi. And today it is raining and windy so the terror of that ride should increase exponentially.
Positano is almost comically vertical. In the past you could only reach this town by boat or donkey. It has been a hideaway for years blessed with spectacular views, terraced gardens, outdoor restaurants, and very expensive shops. 90% of the stores here cater to women’s fashions. This area is known for linen.
It is hard to imagine what day to day life is like here. About 4,000 people live here full time. The town is essentially a staircase crisscrossed by very narrow roads which pedestrians share with Fiats and giant buses. But it is gorgeous.
