July 12, 2018 - We traveled to Hillerød because we wanted to see Fredericksborg Castle. We read it was considered the grandest castle in Scandinavia and it did not disappoint. It was reportedly inspired by Versailles.

Built between 1602 and 1620 it started out as a hunting lodge by Frederick II. But his son Christian IV (the guy from the earlier post) wanted it “bigger”. In 1859 there was a fire and much of it was destroyed.
It was rebuilt to exact detail by the founder of Carlsburg Beer. Today it is a museum.
The picture above is the castle ‘chapel’ located in the main building. Several kings have been crowned in here. The wooden organ here is original from 1620 and still plays. Commoners can get married here, but there is a long wait
