September 1, 2017 - More from the balcony this morning as the sun comes up.
This area has an interesting history. It started out as multiple fruit orchards making " fruit wines" and cheap grape wines. Then, after NAFTA more high end grape varietals were planted and this area shifted to high end wines they could export. The lake allows the vineyards and orchards to have multiple micro climates similar to The Napa valley. It is cool and misty in the morning and hot in the afternoon.
These conditions allow grapes, and other fruits, to thrive. It now looks very much like the Napa valley.
This is the lake's edge here in the Okanagan Valley. This place is lovely beyond words. The lake was glacier made and is some 90 miles long and almost 1000 feet deep. The water is clear and a dense cerulean blue. It never snows here. The lake is surrounded 40 plus wineries with vintages that compete with Napa wines. The weather, particularly this time of year is sublime. Cool mornings and warm afternoons.
And here is the thing - there are very few people here. It is like the best kept secret with a landscape and weather more similar to Tuscany than Canada. No major development. No casinos (Thank God). No major hotels. Just small towns and villages. I wonder how long that will last
