October 22, 2018 - You are looking across a field of ruins that is a portion of the Roman Forum. For those that have never been to this city, think of it as the Main Street of the time. It was here that many of the most important and influential buildings in Rome were found.
There are so many stories to tell here that my cup runneth over. I adore this area and could happily spend hours here.
Here is just one tale.
If you look in the distance at the brown building on the hill with the arches by the trees you will see the remains of the palace of the Emperor Caligula. He has a notorious history. On the afternoon of the 22nd of January 41 AD he had a bit of a hangover and decided to return to that building to take a bath. He was alone with no entourage. There he was stabbed 30 times by his own house guards. He was only 28 years old.
Many Emperors died this way. Once Julius Caesar was killed in a similar manner it set the stage for others to follow.
We are going back tomorrow. Can’t wait.
