King Christian IV

July 8, 2018 - This is the coronation crown of King Christian IV. It weighs seven pounds and is encrusted with gold and precious jewels. It is considered one of the finest examples of a Renaissance crown in Europe.

It sat on the head of Christian IV as he reigned over 50 years. He was a hell of a guy. He was a big boisterous larger than life man who spoke several languages. He was a skilled horseman and hunter. He had numerous affairs and fathered 25 children. Reportedly brave in battle, he lost an eye in a fight once, had the shrapnel removed (survived) and had the bits of metal fashioned into ear rings for his mistress. He died in 1648 in the room upstairs from here. (Rosenborg Castle).

He is still mentioned in the lyrics of Denmark’s National Anthem.
