“Oh thank God, we are back to the France I like…”

- Colleen Dobbs

Our last night on the coast

How can any reasonable person complain about being on the French Riviera? I mean it’s ridiculous. Beautiful azure water & clear hot sun. Its paradise. People pay serious money to come and stay here for an extended period of time. The predatory seagulls mostly leave you alone. There is plenty of room to park your yacht - if one has a yacht.

During our visit to Nice, see previous post, we logged some miles. We walked about 8 1/2 miles in 92 degree heat that reflected strongly off the concrete and water. We didn’t realize it at the time but both of us by that evening and the next day had a mild to moderate case of heat exhaustion. Colleen was so exhausted she could hardly move and I could not get rid of the heat I was retaining despite repeated cool showers.

So we sheltered in place and rested, rehydrated, and spent some time going out only in the evening when the temperature cooled a bit.

I think the issue is going to the Riviera is a beach destination. You spend all day on the beach and then eat out. And since, like most people, we are not staying in a fabulous resort and have a skiff to whizz us back and forth from our yacht. There is nothing wrong with a beach vacation, it is just a challenging place to do it in if you are not a part of the jet set. We were just not fully geared for a beach vacation.

We started North this morning. We are headed for Chamonix, France at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps.

After we pulled out of Nice we started into the foothills of the Alps du Provence. Lavender and Sunflower fields returned. Charming villages made a comeback and both of us gave a sigh of relief to be back in the part of the country we found the most charming.

And these mountains are just the foothills.
